Baseball Pitchers May Need to Wear Futuristic Helmets to Protect Their Brain

A pitcher is in a pretty vulnerable spot on the baseball field: right smack dab in the middle of the action, straight in the line of fire. Easton-Bell decided that because of that potential danger, there was need for a new pitcher helmet that could absorb some of the potentially violent contact.

The goal was to protect scary situations like Gunnar Sandberg, a high school kid who got hit in the head with a line drive and had to be put in a medically induced coma to reduce brain swelling, from happening again. Thankfully Sandberg is fine now, and is completely on board with a new pitcher helmet, telling people, “Wouldn’t you rather wear this than be in the hospital for two months?”.

Waar wij Nederlandse honkballers en softbalsters al in januari (of soms al vroeger) beginnen aan zaaltrainingen, ligt het profhonkbal in Amerika in de winter volledig stil. Natuurlijk, er zijn ticker tape parades voor de winnaars van de World Series. Er worden prijzen uitgereikt aan de beste spelers, de beste pitchers, de beste managers en de beste rookies. Er zijn verkiezingen voor de Hall of Fame. Er zijn Winter Meetings, waar general managers, managers en free agents praten over hun plannen voor het komende seizoen en proberen goede deals te sluiten en er zijn geruchten. Geruchten over spelers, over teams en over managers, maar het spelletje waar wij allemaal zo van houden, honkbal, wordt niet gespeeld.
